In order to become an EMT, one must go through the following steps:

  • Enroll in an EMT-Basic course. All EMTs must at least have completed and passed a recognized EMT-Basic program. Some states refer to this basic level EMT program using different terms (for example, EMT-1), but they are all generally equivalent in nature and scope.
  • Ensure that you are CPR certified.
  • Complete and pass an EMT-Basic psychomotor examination approved by the state.
  • Pass the National Registry of Emergency Technicians (NRET) EMT-Basic certification exam.
  • Look for an EMT job that requires EMT-Basic or EMT-1 certification, or
  • Enroll and complete the next level of EMT, EMT-I or EMT-Intermediate, or in an EMT to paramedic course.
